hollywood party.

Warning: this post is heavy on music and movies, light on gallivanting around town. It was just one of those lazy weekends.

Cinespia, the great organization that shows classic films at the Hollywood Forever cemetery, recently showed Peter Seller's (or Blake Edwards' if that's how you want to look at it) The Party. I couldn't make it, but I really wanted to check it out.

So, I did. What fascinates me about The Party is how it easily have been a silent movie, with Sellers as its Chaplin-esque star. Also? Co-star Claudine Longet, who I don't remember from anything else but has a pretty interesting story.

I made it a weekend Sellers double feature with The Magic Christian. Sellers + Terry Southern + Ringo when he was still in the Beatles? How could anything possibly go wrong?

Well, it could. This movie could have been called "Peter Sellers performs a Peter Sellers parody while Ringo Starr Watches." Meandering and mean-spirited, although somewhat fun for the cameos: a young and dashing John Cleese, Roman Polanski and Raquel Welch. Sellers thought this was his worst performance. I might have to agree. But Ringo was super cute.

I'd like to tell you about a book I'm reading called Jolie Blon's Bounce. My dad recommended it to me. Actually, I'm listening to it via Audible.com during my commute. Going from reading books to listening to books is a cognitive shift, but an amazing narrator can make a great book even greater.

I'm always in search of crime or suspense novels that read like literature, and I'm excited because Jolie Blon's Bounce does just that. The book begins with a crime, but is so much more about the exploration of characters, plus that of the place--New Iberia, Louisiana. Narrator Mark Hammer, a character and stage actor who is now deceased, really brings the Louisiana dialect to life in every character he voices.

So, I looked up to see if any of JLB's books have been adapted to film. Yes! In addition to the more widely know Heaven's Prisoners (1996) starring Alec Baldwin, it looks like there might have been one that went straight-to-video (a phrase that's now become straight-to-Netflix-streaming), In the Electric Mist. And it actually looks pretty great, too. I'm going to check it out this weekend.

In the Electric Mist

I've been listening to some new music this week, too. Let me tell you about it. I really like this album, Fear Fun, by Father John Misty, aka Josh Tillman, who was once the drummer for Fleet Foxes. He may still be--I'm not sure.

Fear Fun

The album is like a journey through L.A., with songs like "Hollywood Forever Cemetery Sings," "I Am Writing a Novel," and "Funtimes in Babylon," which ends "Look out Hollywood, here I come."

I came across this photo on SubPop's IG feed. I was intrigued.

I am also really liking this crazy band, Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros. They are like a big troupe of musicians and singers, and the music is all folk and country and soul and everything. It's very joyful and catchy and uplifting. I really like to play it when I'm making dinner and washing the dishes.

Both Father John Misty and Edward Sharpe make me think a little of the Source Family.

Sampled the hand brewed coffee at Nancy Silverton's Short Order in the Farmer's Market. Also the cold press coffee at Cafecito Organico at their new outpost in "Hel-Mel" (Heliotrope and Melrose--that's right.).

The perfect cup of joe takes time, my friends.
And looks like a high school science experiment.

Been hearing so much about SQRL. I thought I'd check it out after I got my hair done on Saturday. Still very much a little home-spun place, and I had what you see below, which was super delicious, but left me hungry. Insert sad emoticon here.

Kokuho brown rice with kale pesto, Meyer lemon, poached
egg, lacto-fermented hot sauce (?), dill, feta and radish.

I can't believe I've never been to...Sushi Yuzu. Mostly because it's walking distance from my house. Who knew that one of the best sushi places in the Valley isn't on Ventura Boulevard, but on Riverside Drive. Well, a lot of people, but not me. I will be coming back.

A new blog I'm loving: Beard and Bonnet. I got this recipe for raw gluten-free enchiladas that I must whip up this weekend. I think it will be perfect for movie-watching (see: In the Electric Mist).

That's all for now. See you soon!
