song of the day.

Song of the Day: "Trouble Weighs a Ton"by Dan Auerbach.

Now, I don't fancy myself any kind of music critic, but I know what I love, and when I love something, I want to shout it to the world.

And I love the 2009 album Keep It Hid, the solo effort by Black Keys' Dan Auerbach. I've been going through some kind of shift with music lately. For the past few years, I've only been listening to classical music--mostly of the 20th Century Avant-Garde variety.

But 2015 introduced a new phase. I want to rock all the time. Been listening mostly to some of the rarer 60s music (NOT the same 10-12 songs they're always blaring on classic rock stations), punk, and garage rock of every era. So of course, I've been blasting the Black Keys a lot, and Auerbach's Keep It Hid has slipped into my Pandora rotation.

This album brings back some vivid memories--the beginning of summer, 90+ degree days, being out on the deck, being lazy, being in my 30s (but not for long), being able to blast my music because I don't share walls with anyone, gardening, drinking lots of iced coffee. Keep It Hid was the soundtrack for all of this.

But when the track, "Trouble Weighs a Ton" came on the other day, I swear it was the first time I had ever heard it. I'm sure it wasn't, but I had no memory of it. I stopped working, closed my eyes and just listened to the lyrics:

Trouble in the air,
trouble's all I see
Does anybody care,
Trouble’s killing me
Oh, it's killing me...

It was one of those times when a song makes everything around you disappear. It also made me feel like I was in O Brother Where Art Thou. George Clooney in prison stripes kept popping into my head.
The song is also the theme for Sons of Anarchy's fifth season. You can take a listen here.
