I love this wildly inventive photographer because he understands what horror is truly about--fear. Childhood fears, unconscious fears unearthed in dreams, fears of the modern world. His photos are more terrifying than most current horror films (except for The Descent--that was some scary stuff). Maybe that's because a series of images ultimately leaves the story up to the viewer's imagination.
As the artist states on his website:
"I believe that the Horror story is ultimately concerned with the imminence
and randomness of death, and the implication that there is no certainty
to existence. The experience of Horror resides in this confrontation
with uncertainty. Horror tells us that our belief in security is delusional
and that the monsters are all around us."
Hoffine has released his first film, Black Lullaby, which you can rent ($1.99) or buy ($3.99) at Vimeo. Note to all Hollywood producers: please watch, and give this man a delicious film deal.
More to love:
While I'm not big on Chick Lit, a dear friend recommended Where'd You Go, Bernadette, and I finally downloaded the Audible version, as it's performed by another dear friend, Kathleen Wilhoite. It's quite charming--the perfect plane or beach read that gives you a chuckle every few pages.
"Chihulys are the pigeons of Seattle." Indeed.
Did you know it's Sao Paulo Fashion Week? It's true. I'm really loving the Fashion Weeks from around the world.
SPFW is in the news this year as it heralds Gisele Bundchen's final strut down the runway, but it makes the blog because I was charmed by the looks of designer Patricia Bonaldi.
